Burgundy lips are having a bit of a moment, so I decided to trial the shade out myself and laquer up my lips with a stroke of the daring color. Now I'm still not sure this is one that I'm brave enough to wear out, but when I want to experiment with my makeup at home and feel like a diva, the deep red shades will definitely be coming out more often.
The particular shade that I've been addicted to ... Revlon's Black Cherry from the Super Lustrous Lipstick line. Almost black in the bullet, this looks like an extremely scary shade, but once swatched comes out a gorgeous dark red with a tiny hint of purple helping teeth look extremely white and inject a little bit of seasonal appropriateness into any look. The price, as drugstore lipsticks go leans towards the high end of the spectrum, but as an 'almost' dupe of MAC's Media and Diva lipsticks, I would say it leans somewhere in between the two, it's great value if you were thinking of picking one of those up instead, and the quality really doesn't disappoint.
The only area that I feel lets this lipstick down is the sheen. When wearing a dark lip, I worry. I don't want it on my teeth, or to look in a mirror half way through the day and find that it has smudged, joker style, half way across my face so I find that matte formulas are usually the way to go. To remedy this, I blot, reapply and powder the lipstick to set it in place, which is fine, but just a bit of a pain when I could easily have just a matte lipstick in the first place - and of course, a good lip liner will work wonders as well. However, this works to its advantage when applied lightly as a stain and smudged out, the perfect way to wear this lipstick for a bit of an lower maintenance, everyday look.
For anyone looking to experiment with some darker, more daring shades this winter, I would definitely recommend Black Cherry, just be warned that if you're wanting something with a bit more longevity, then opting for higher end is probably the way to go.
What do you think of these kinds of colours, are you brave enough to give them a go?
