AJ Burnett is still leading the league in Ks, now with 79. Jason Grilli is still leading the league in saves with 19. Bleacher Report has them listed in top 100 pitchers this year at #26 and #35 respectively, along with Wandy Rodriguez at #51. All star buzz has begun, with most of it centered around Cutch. I’m not gonna get into my argument about why AJB and Grilli should also be coming onto the radar as candidates too. Their record thus far is indicative of their potential.
With their recent successes, sweep of the Cubs, and this interaction between them and the Penguins, it’s fair to say our Buccos need to keep this early momentum going. Don’t mistake my enthusiasm as me saying they’re gonna do a 360* change and win the World Series. That’s not what I’m trying to say. I’m trying to say that they need to capitalize on this high they’re riding. They’re heading into a series with the Brewers, who they constantly struggle against. This momentum in their favor hopefully will help them get past the Brew Crew.
The hash tag #pirates was trending NATIONALLY on twitter almost all day yesterday. People are starting to give a tip of their hats to the Pirates. We will call it “mild optimism.” We all know that they’ve been known to miserably choke and fail. I cannot stress the importance of keeping this momentum going. Even if they lose a couple games over the next few weeks, they shouldn’t let that define them going forward. The vets like Burnett and Grilli are doing an awesome job of keeping everyone motivated.
Highly vocal on twitter, both these guys have been tweeting like crazy lately. We see pictures of them goofing around in the dugout. Burnett retweeted one yesterday of himself and Snider. AJ is shooting an air bow and Snider is taking aim with an air gun. Brandon Inge showed up to the clubhouse yesterday in full hockey gear head to toe, although he had roller blades instead of ice skates. This inter-team camaraderie was a huge reason the Pirates were trending on Twitter yesterday.
We can all agree that it’s refreshing and fun to see the Pirates doing well. They’re starting to garner a little more national media attention. Players besides Cutch are starting to be noticed. The interaction with the Pens was a huge hit with fans of both teams yesterday. All these things are bringing so much positivity into that ball club. I really hope that they can find a way to keep rolling on this wave of inspiration.
