BUCN Perfect : McGuire and Meadows...Signed and Unsigned

Reese McGuire, catcher from Kentwood, WA, 14^th overall pick in the first round by your Pittsburgh Pirates. The draft was June 6^th. From the very second he was drafted, he was pumped up to be a part of #BUCN. June 7^th he tweeted: “Waking up and realizing what I finally accomplished yesterday… Can’t wait to get started. #BUCN #Pittsburgh #Pirates.” June 8^th Reese graduated high school, the Pirates inked his deal June 17^th, and he was on a plane to the GCL Pirates on June 18^th.
Enter, Austin Meadows, outfielder from Georgia, 9^th overall pick in the draft. Tweeted June 6^th that he was a Pittsburgh Pirate, and tweeted McGuire to exchange phone numbers. He posted a picture of himself and his girlfriend, and he’s wearing a Pirates hat in the picture. Nothing has been heard of his deal (or no deal) since the draft. Sketchy.
Here’s the insight I can provide you… I spoke with Reese on multiple occasions throughout the process from draft night, till he got on the plane to Florida. This guy was bubbling over with enthusiasm about getting his pro career started. He even went as far as saying girlfriends are “dream killers” and that’s why he’s stayed single. He told me his only focus was baseball and becoming a pro catcher. I absolutely adored the kid.
Ohhhhhh Austin, he doesn’t seem quite as enthusiastic as Reese. I was trying to gain some insight into the thinking behind why Meadows hasn’t signed yet. One thing in particular stuck out to me: the dream killer girlfriend. (Reese stressed the fact that baseball was his only concern right now, even though he eventually wants a family.) I took a few minutes to do some simple Twitter and Instagram stalking, and I’m here to tell you I believe she’s the reason he hasn’t signed yet.
These things I know for sure: Her Instagram account in now private. It wasn’t a few weeks ago. She has hundreds of pictures of them on her account. So does he, but he also has a lot of sports pictures too. She’s already in college at Georgia College and State University, he committed to Clemson. Clemson is a whooooooole lot closer to Georgia than rookie ball for the Pirates. They seem to be way too lovey dovey for her to let him go away to play ball.
Maybe he’s holding out for more money. Maybe he’s going to pull a Mark Appel. Maybe I’m totally wrong. Her Instagram became private…which is fishy to me. He hasn’t tweeted anything about the Pirates since draft day…also odd. I’m telling you I think the girlfriend is a dream killer. If her twitter becomes private, I guarantee you she's the reason he isn't signing. You can draw your own conclusions, but you heard it here first.
