Shoes: Shell cordovan and Edward Green models are excluded from the sale, but everything else in the footwear section is eligible. I like these Algonquin split toes, Alden-made suede bluchers (boring on first sight, but exceedingly versatile), Alden-made suede penny loafers, and tie loafers in brown suede and calf. They also have some basic Superga sneakers for summer.
Filson: Brooks Brothers’ Friends and Family sale is often the best time to pick up Filson luggage, which is otherwise relatively hard to find on discount. I own and use this model in tan a lot. It also comes in a wider version if you need more carrying space.
Umbrella: Cheap umbrellas tend to be pretty ugly, but I’ve always thought this tattersall is a handsome option. Ignoring the sockless wingtips, here’s a stylized shot of someone using the same brolly.
Shirts: Brooks Brothers’ extra-slim-fit cut is too slim for me, while their regular slim-fit is too big. If you’re not in between sizes like I am, Brooks Brothers does make some really nice oxford cloth button downs. The fabrics have a bit more character than other lines on the market, and the collar points are still reasonably full (just avoid the Red Fleece line). The extra-slim-fit model comes in solid and striped colors, while the slim fit is only available in solid. There are also some slim fit linen shirts, as well as madras shirts in dark andlight color palettes.
Sale Section: The Friends & Family code also applies to stuff in the sale section, where you can find Donegal knit ties and suede chukka boots. I bought one of the knit ties myself, thanks to a tip from a reader, and am hoping to use it this fall with tweed sport coats.
Black Fleece Shirts: Similarly, Brooks Brothers’ Black Fleece line has a sale section, where there’s a wide selection of shirts. Black Fleece is typically better constructed than Brooks’ mainline, but often a bit out there in terms of design. Their shirts, however, are surprisingly classic. They often have a silly loop at the back, but you can have that removed by a tailor.
