In December 2013 the lead singer for Austin based four-piece Boy + Kite, Darvin Jones, suffered a traumatic head injury and was hospitalized in critical condition — a synapsis in both ears broken, the hemispheres of his brain severed and his skull fractured. While people questioned the band’s future, the adversity only made Jones and company’s desire to play music stronger. And rightly so. Boy + Kite had been picking up serious traction in 2012; playing SXSW and receiving massive support from the Hypem crowd with their ghostly lo-fi EP We Can Go Anywhere I Want.
As Darvin recovered, the group wrote their newest collection of songs entitled Blueprint (out October 21st). Recorded at Public Hi-fi Studios in Austin (owned and operated by Jim Eno from Spoon), the resulting three song EP showcases the most exciting work of Boy + Kite’s career. We now have the pleasure of premiering their catchy, cathartic track, “Turned Sideways”, which stands as a testament to the group’s ability to persevere in the face of adversity and still write excellent music.
