Bootcut, skinny, slim, carrot, loose; We hear so many different terms to describe styles of jeans, but who knows what they actually mean? This quick and simple guide will explain all of these terms so you can find the perfect pair of jeans.

Skinny Jeans

Be extremely careful with skinny jeans. If you’re on the heavier side then they won’t look good. However, for men with slimmer legs this is a very popular style at the moment. Skinny jeans are designed to have a tight fit all the way down the leg. Comfort may be an issue with skinny jeans, as they don’t allow much room for movement.

Slim Fit Jeans

Slim fit jeans are similar to skinny jeans, in the sense they’re tight all the way down the leg, but they’re not as tight. This makes them ideal for somebody who doesn’t have skinny legs, but likes the skinny style of jeans.

Classic Fit Jeans

Classic fit jeans are just a regular pair of jeans that don’t widen, and don’t taper at any point. This is the safest option if you’re unsure about which style is best for you. Whilst classic fit jeans won’t clash with any upper clothing or footwear, they are also unlikely to be a perfect match.

Bootcut Jeans

Bootcut jeans get tighter below the knee cap, and then widen around the ankle to allow a boot to fit inside them. However, the widening towards the ankle is nowhere near the same as a pair of flares, so don’t worry about looking like a 4th Beegee. Today bootcut jeans are commonly worn with or without boots.

Carrot Fit Jeans

Carrot fit jeans look the same as regular jeans at the top, but get skinnier as they move down towards the ankle. They can get very skinny around the ankle, so don’t expect to be able to wear boots with them, unless you want to take a fashion risk and have the boots on the outside of the jeans.

Loose Fit Jeans

Loose fit jeans are more suited to larger body types who don’t want their shape to stand out. These jeans are baggy all the way from waist to ankle, meaning they won’t really suit anybody with slim legs, who could look lost in them. If you’re buying baggy jeans, make sure you get your leg measurement right, as they’ll be dragging on the floor if they’re just slightly too long.

Rises

The rise of a pair of jeans is also extremely important. The rise defines how high up the waistline of the jeans will be on the body. Generally, skinny body types suit a low rise or medium rise, average body types suit any rise, and large body types suit a high rise or medium rise.

Remember, rules are there to be broken…

Just because a particular style of jeans doesn’t normally work well with your body type, or footwear, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t give it a go. At least try them on in the shop and see how they look. There’s always exceptions to rules in fashion, and often the most succesful fashion combinations are those that break the rules.
