After her husband dies, Blum finds some recordings of her phone. They’re of Mark questioning a witness about some gruesome crimes, where she was held and tortured so a photographer could take pictures of her face as it contorted in terror. They were also responsible for her husband’s death.

It’s billed as a mixture of Kill Bill and Dexter, and in fact the author even makes a reference to the latter in the book. For the record I’ve never seen Dexter but I always thought the concept was interesting. Unfortunately, this book is not.

The main thing that turned me off was the writing style. It has such a detachment about it that it feels like the author is relaying second-hand information and he never delves into the deep feelings behind it all. I wanted more description of the murders and more introspection as Blum went on her quest of vengeance. And it was all reported as though it wasn’t a big deal. The dialog was standard and it was just dialogue, there was no indication as to tone of voice or changes of expression while speaking and I just keep coming back to that word – detached.

It also doesn’t help that the story is unoriginal and there’s a plot twist that is easy to see coming. In fact part of the only reason why I continued reading was so that I could confirm the twist would happen, and I rolled my eyes when it did. It lacks charm and flair, and because it’s so detached it’s also difficult to work up any sort of feeling for the characters and the situation.

This is a complete pass from me. I found nothing of worth in it at all.
