Here are a selective few Bollywood movies (released between 2010 to 2018) which are either an official remake, or are inspired from, or are straight away a copy of International remakes:
Phobia (2016)
Pavan Kirpalani's film 'Phobia' received a great critical response when released to the Indian market. The film's lead Radhika Apte received a lot of appraisal for her performance in the film. The film has been inspired by 2015's Hollywood film, 'Visions' directed by Kevin Greutert, is an American supernatural film. The films cast includes the film stars Isla Fisher, Anson Mount, Gillian Jacobs, Jim Parsons, Joanna Cassidy, and Eva Longoria, and has a plotline related to a serious mental disorder known as agoraphobia.
Hate Story 3 (2015)
An erotic thriller, the movie is directed by Vishal Pandya and stars Karan Singh Grover, Daisy Shah, Zareen Khan and Sharman Joshi in the lead roles. The movie's material is inspired by 1993's Hollywood film, 'Indecent Proposal' directed by Adrian Lyne and starring Robert Redford, Demi Moore, and Woody Harrelson. The Bollywood remake received lukewarm responses and reviews from critics but was able to print substantial money. It was declared a box office hit.
Alone (2015)
Bipasha Basu starred in this movie alongside her current husband, Karan Singh Grover. The horror film was a remake of a Thai movie which shares the same name and released in 2007. The original movie was directed by Banjong Pisanthanakun and Parkpoom Wongpoom, and starred Marsha Wattanpanich. As for the Hindi remake, Karan Singh Grover's debut was praised, and so was Bipasha's acting as conjoined twins. The film was a moderate success at the box office, surpassing initial critical expectations.
Ek Villain (2014)
This Mohit Suri directed movie stars Sidharth Malhotra, Shraddha Kapoor and Riteish Deshmukh in the lead roles. The movie is loosely based on the South Korean movie, 'I Saw The Devil' released in 2010. The original was directed by Kim Jee-woon, and starred Lee Byung-hun and Choi Min-sik. Both movies have similar plotlines, where an enraged protagonist hunts for his fiancé's killer. The movie received positive reviews and was declared a hit in India.
City Lights (2014)
Rajkummar Rao stars in this film opposite Patralekha. The movie is directed by Hansal Mehta and is inspired by the 2013 British movie 'Metro Manila'. The British film was directed by Sean Ellis, and starred Jake Macapagal and Althea Vega. The story of both films follow the lives of a poor, agrarian family who migrates to the city in order to search for a better living standard. Trouble boils as their desperation leads to tragedy. Although not a huge commercial hit, the movie received rave reviews.
Jai Ho (2014)
This Sohail Khan film, starring Salman Khan, Tabu, Daisy Shah, Danny Dengzongpa and Aditya Pancholi is actually a double remake. It is a remake of a Telugu film titled 'Stalin', which released in 2006, which was directed by A.R. Murugadoss, and starred Chiranjeevi and Trisha Krishnan. 'Stalin' itself was a remake of the Hollywood movie 'Pay It Forward', which was released in 2000 and directed by Mimi Leder. This Hollywood film had Kevin Spacey, Haley Joel Osment and Helen Hunt in the lead roles. In fact, 'Jai Ho' has a scene right in the beginning of the movie, which is somewhat inspired by a scene in the Hollywood original. Nonetheless, 'Jai Ho' was a huge success at the box office, returning almost thrice its budget.
Bang Bang (2014)
This Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif starrer is an official remake of Hollywood's immensely successful 'Knight and Day'. The original movie was released in 2010 and had Tom Cruise along with Cameron Diaz in the lead roles. Both films had great stunts and insurmountable drama. The Bollywood remake, of course, had a couple of song numbers which made the Indian audience groove as well.
Murder 3 (2013)
This is the third entry in the 'Murder' film franchise, and is directed by Vishesh Bhatt. It is an official remake of the 2011 Colombian film, 'The Hidden Face'. The original was directed by Andrés Baiz, and starred Quim Gutierrez, Clara Lago, and Martina Garcia in the lead roles. The Hindi remake opened to mixed reviews from critics and audiences, but the performance of the lead cast of Aditi Rao Hydari, Randeep Hooda and Sara Loren was praised.
Mere Dad Ki Maruti (2013)
Ashima Chibber's 2013 comedy movie stars Saqib Saleem, Ram Kapoor, and Rhea Chakraborty. The film's main plot had been inspired by the 2000 Hollywood cult hit 'Dude, Where's My Car?' Danny Leiner directed the original, which had Seann William Scott and Ashton Kutcher in the lead roles. The film's plot shows that two men engage in extreme amounts of partying one particular night. When they wake up the next day, they can barely remember what happened, and most importantly, where they parked their car.
Players (2012)
Another remake of a Hollywood film, 'Players' follows an ensemble cast including the likes of Abhishek Bachchan and Sonam Kapoor. It also has a very similar storyline to its inspiration, 1969's 'The Italian Job'. The classic was directed by Peter Collinson, and comprised a lead cast of the likes of Michael Caine and Tony Beckley. Although the original was quite a big hit in Hollywood, the remake failed to endear itself to the Indian masses.
F.A.L.T.U (2011)
Directed by Remo D'Souza, this particular film borrowed its plotline from 'Accepted', a Hollywood comedy released in 2006. The original movie was directed by Steve Pink and starred the likes of Justin Long, Blake Lively and Jonah Hill. When it came to the Indian version of this film, Jackky Bhagnani, Puja Gupta, Angad Bedi, Chandan Singh Ranyal and Riteish Deshmukh in the lead roles. The film's plot follows misfits as they try to impress their parents with fake marks given by a fake university. The film was a moderate success in the box office.
Murder 2 (2011)
This psychological horror-slasher movie is directed by Mohit Suri and produced by Mukesh Bhatt. Starring Emraan Hashmi and Jacqueline Fernandez, the movie's plot is inspired by that of the Korean film 'The Chaser'. 'The Chaser' was directed by Na Hong-Jin, and had Kim Yoon-Seok and Ha Jung-Woo in the lead roles. Coming back to 'Murder 2', the film's plot revolves around the mystery of call girls going missing. An out-of-favour former cop is then asked to search for them. The movie was called a Blockbuster by the box office.
Teen Patti (2010)
This Leena Yadav film starred an ensemble cast, with the likes of Amitabh Bachchan, Shraddha Kapoor and Ben Kingsley. The film is based loosely on the Hollywood hit '21', directed by Robert Luketic and starring huge names such as Kevin Spacey, Liza Lapira and Laurence Fishbourne. Both films have similar stories, in which probability is related to and used for winning card games. The film failed to impress in the box office, however, and only managed to get a small return of its budget.
We Are Family (2010)
This Bollywood movie is inspired by the 1998 movie 'Stepmom', which was directed by Chris Columbus and starred Julia Roberts, Susan Sarandon and Ed Harris in the lead roles. Although the Bollywood remake starring Kajol and Kareena Kapoor Khan was not that big a hit with the Indian audience, it did do justice to the Hollywood movie. Both movies beautifully depict the difficulties of dealing with divorce and step-parenting.
Bumm Bumm Bole (2010)
A film directed by Priyadarshan, this movie is the official remake of the Iranian film 'Children of Heaven', which released in 1997. The original was directed by Majid Majidi, and starred Reza Naji, Mir Farrokh Hashemian and Bahare Seddiqi in the lead roles. The remake has a cast of Rituparna Sengupta, Darsheel Safary, Atul Kulkarni, and Ziyah Vastani. Both movies are family dramas and showcase how a siblings have an adventure over a pair of shoes which have been misplaced. The remake received positive reviews but had limited success at the box office.
