Last week while walking to the subway during morning rush hour I couldn't help but notice all the black. It looked like everyone was headed to a funeral. Granted, this is New York, that morning was no different than what you see on most days, but there was something about that day that particularly stood out to me. It was an unseasonably mild day and after a long, cold winter, all my fellow commuters looked bogged down in all the dark color, their clothes all looked slightly worn from constant wear and they all appeared to just be over their winter clothes.
New Yorkers, like most people, are hardly looking to give up their black clothing. However, as spring starts warm things up, it has the potential to start to looking heavy and depressing. I started thinking of ways to make black look softer and more spring appropriate and recalled all the blush pink I have been seeing in the stores. I feel like blush hasn't gone anywhere as a trend, yet, this spring, it seems even stronger as ever. Despite it's trendiness, it's often a tough color for most to wear. Yet, combined with black, the two balance each other out nicely. Blush brings a softness to stark, heavy black and black anchors and makes the lightness of blush more wearable for most.
Black with Blush: How to Soften Black for Spring
If you're looking for a change this spring but aren't ready to embrace the fruity brights that are on their way for the warm season, take a look at how you can soften your black clothing with blush. Not a fan of black, like me? Don't worry, you can easily swap out black for navy, or any neutral you prefer, in the outfits I put together below.
Outfit #1
Take that perfect black dress that you wore all winter with tights and boots and add some softness with blush and nude accessories. I styled this knitted fit and flare dress from Reiss with block heel pumps from Marc Fisher, a blush pink satchel from Furla, soft grey and blush scarf from Nordstrom. I finished the outfit with a layered necklace from Baublebar.
Outfit #2
The versatility of black, along with most neutral colors, is that they can easily be switched up with accessories to look completely different. I styled a classic winter look of jeans from Madwell and a black crewneck sweater from J. Crew with a blush suede jacket, Rebecca Minkoff hobo, super cute trainers from Cole Haan, and rose gold baguette earrings from Banana Republic.
Outfit #3
Blush can be a tricky face color for some people to wear. If it is for you, you can consider pairing it with more flattering shades near your face through jewelry, scarves or a topper piece. Working tonally with black, I styled this top from Ted Baker with a grey cardigan from Theory and black pants from Lafayette 148. I finished the outfit with grey block heel sandals from Lucky Brand, All Saints calfskin tote, semiprecious drop earrings from Topshop and rose gold necklace.
