Biogradska Gora is a forest and a national park in Montenegro within Kolašin municipality. Among Biogradska Gora National Park's most unique features is its 1,600 hectare (3,954 acre) rainforest-one of Europe's three remaining rain forests. The history of its preservation, as well as that of the park's, dates back to 1878 when the area was donated to Duke Nikola, the ruler of Montenegro. Since then, as a "Duke's reserve," the area has remained under the protection of the state. Lake Biograd (Biogradsko Jezero), located in the heart of the rain forest at an elevation of 1,094 meters (3,589 feet), is the biggest and best known of the park's seven glacial lakes. The park is also know for having 26 plant communities consisting of some 2,000 species and subspecies. Deer, wolf, wild boar, fox, rabbit and over 350 different species of insects are also known to inhabit the park. The majestic Imperial Eagle, Aquila heliaca, is among one of over 200 bird species that can be seen here.
