They just don’t get it – criminals do not typically purchase guns from a legitimate seller. This new tax will affect all legal gun owners yet a minority of the criminals.

NY Daily News: A new bill to reduce gun violence aims to hit would-be weapons buyers where it hurts — in the wallet. U.S. Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez is introducing a bill that would slap every gun sale with a $100 tax, and then use the extra money on anti-violence and mental health programs.
She announced the new legislation — which will be introduced to Congress later this week — at City Hall on Monday alongside key supporters, including U.S. Rep. Hakeem Jeffries.
Jeffries will co-sponsor the bill, which also includes provisions that would require all gun owners to report any stolen weapons within 48 hours. Currently, there is no such requirement — a loophole that allows shady straw buyers to pretend that guns they purchased where simply stolen when they turn up in crimes. Those who don’t report weapons stolen from their homes will be hit with a $10,000 penalty.
It will also require the National Institute for Standards and Technology — the federal agency is tasked with developing new technologies — to work with the Department of Justice to develop better technologies to determine the origins of guns used in crimes.

“Gun violence is a plague on our city that shatters lives and tears families apart,” Velázquez said. “This bill will take meaningful steps to address the issue, reducing the flow of guns on the street, empowering law enforcement to better track missing weapons, while investing in community anti-violence programs.
