Location
Bhairavnath Dham also known as Bhairav-Sthan is located in Bhojudih, a small town in the Chandankiyari block of the Bokaro district in the Indian state of Jharkhand.
The place lies in the borders of the district of Bokaro and Dhanbad, about 48 KM from the Bokaro Steel City.
History
The place is not only known for its ancient temple but also for a pond, known as Pavitra Kund, located just near the temple. According to mythology, the Pandavas had spent some time here during their exile. It was then, Arjuna created the Pavitra Kund with his arrow when he felt thirsty and could not find any trace of water around.
Ancient temple at Bhairavnath Dham is about 800 years old and the idols belong to the 12th century. The temple is dedicated to Lord Bhairava, a fierce incarnation of Lord Shiva. Along with the idol of Lord Bhairava, the Temple also has an idol of Goddess Durga.
As stated by the locals, once a villager got a dream from Lord Bhairavnath telling him about his idol floating in the Izri river and instructing him to establish it near the Pavitra Kund.
The next day when the villagers went to the river, they were surprised to find the idol of Lord Bhairavnath. It was the villagers who established the idol and started worshipping it. Later when the King came to know about it, he constructed the temple.
Best Time To Visit
Bhairavnath Temple can be visited at any time of the year. However, thousands of devotees visit the place especially on Shivaratri, in the holy month of Shravan and during the Bhairavnath Mahotsav.
Bhairavnath Mahotsav
Bhairavnath Mahotsav is a three-day annual affair that takes place in Bhojudih in the month of April. It is an initiative by the Jharkhand Tourism along with state art, culture, sports, and youth affairs department to promote this place as a religious circuit.
Famous Bollywood icons are invited each year to perform during the festival. Some of the personalities that had performed in the past years are Udit Narayan, Kailash Kher, Himesh Reshammiya, and Sumedha Karmahe to name a few.
Weather
Bokaro enjoys a tropical climate. Summers begin in the month of March and prevails till the month of June with the temperature stretching between 35 to 49-degree centigrade. April and May are the hottest months.
The rainy season commences in the month of July and continues till the month of August. The winter season ranges between November to February with the temperature dropping as low as 10 to 15 degrees centigrades. December and January are the coldest months.
