Options to Transfer Two-wheelers via Train in India

Before transferring your bike know that Indian Railways has two option to transfer two-wheelers via train

What is the luggage option?

Transferring your bike via luggage option means your bike will be transferred in the luggage wagon of an Express/Superfast train. For transferring your bike with luggage option you will need a confirmed reserved ticket. You can choose this option if you are travelling on the same train.

What is the parcel option?

Transferring your bike via parcel option means your bike will be transferred in a Goods (Freight) train. This option is convenient if you are travelling via flight or any other mode of transport or you are transferring your bike without travelling.

You can select any of the options. However, the recommended method to transfer is through the parcel.

Note: In this article, we are referring only "How to transfer of your bike via Indian Railways Parcel option".

How to parcel your bike from Bangalore to Kolkata via train?

Transferring your bike via Indian Railways parcel consist of two parts,

  1. Packing your bike (which can be done by you or you can take the service of private packers who are available right near the Railway Parcel office.)

Steps to parcel your bike from Bangalore to Kolkata (if you pack your bike on your own)

  1. Pack your bike according to the guidelines mentioned in the "Guidelines to pack your bike" section of this page.
  2. Visit the Yeswanthpur Railway Parcel Office with your packed bike. [Refer to the "Address and Contact Information" section of this page for the address details.]
  3. Collect the "Two-Wheeler Parcel" form from the parcel office.
  4. Fill in all the details required in the form. [Refer to the "Required Information" section of this page.]
  5. Attach the copies of the required documents along with the form. [Refer to the "Required Documents" section of this page.]
  6. Now hand over the form along with the copies of the required documents to the Inspection officer.
  7. Also, produce the original copies of the required documents for verification.
  8. After checking the form and the documents, the inspection officer will inspect the bike.
  9. If the bike is packed according to the guidelines mentioned in the "Guidelines to packing your bike" section of this page, he will approve it.
  10. The Inspection officer will write verified in the form and will ask you to visit the payment counter.
  11. Visit the payment counter with the form and the copies of the required documents.
  12. Deposit the form and the copies of the required documents to the officer in the payment counter.
  13. Make the payment with Debit card / Credit Card / Cash. No form of digital payment is accepted. [Refer to the "Parcel Charges" section of this page to know about the cost to transfer your bike.]
  14. Once the payment is successful, the officer will give you a receipt and a carbon copy of the receipt. Keep the receipt safe for collecting the bike.
  15. Also, you will receive an SMS on the mobile number you mentioned in the form.
  16. Now, go to the railway workers in charge of keeping the parcels in the parcel warehouse.
  17. Give the carbon copy of the receipt to the worker and ask him to keep your bike in the parcel warehouse. (He may ask for some tips.)
  18. Now you are done with all the procedures.

Steps to transfer your bike from Bangalore to Kolkata (if you are taking the packing service of Indian Railways)

  1. Visit the Packers and Movers appointed by the Indian Railways. Sri Manjunatha Packers and Movers is located at a distance of 200 meters from the Yeswanthpur Railway Parcel Office.

  2. Select the plan you want to choose.
    Here are the plans for bike packaging"
    INR 400 - INR 500: Normal Sack Packaging
    INR 501 - INR 600: Cardboard and SackPackaging
    INR 601 - INR 700: Bubble Wrap, Cardboard and Sack Packaging
  3. The recommended one if the cardboard and Sack Packaging.
  4. After you select the packaging, the movers and packers will pack your bike properly according to the guidelines. [Refer to the "Guidelines to pack your bike" section of this page.]
  5. Take a bottle along with you in which they can pour petrol while emptying the bike tank. Do not carry the bottle containing petrol inside the railway premises as it is a punishable offence. You can ask the movers and packers to keep it while you visit the parcel office and collect it on your way back.
  6. Next, they will fill-up the "Two-Wheeler Parcel" form on your behalf, so provide them with all the required information. [Refer to the "Required Information" section of this page.]
  7. The "Two-Wheeler Parcel" form is available at the movers and packers and, therefore, no need to visit the parcel office to collect it.
  8. Once they have finished with the packing and filling up the form, staff from the movers and packers will take your bike to the Yeswanthpur railway parcel office. You can follow the staff to the parcel office.
  9. The staff will park your bike at the entrance of the parcel office and leave. From here you have to do the rest of the procedure.
  10. Reach out to the Inspection officer and hand over the form along with the copies of the required documents.
  11. Also, produce the original copies of the required documents for verification to the officer.
  12. The inspection officer will check the form and the documents and then will inspect the bike.
  13. If the bike is packed according to the guidelines mentioned in the "Guidelines to packing your bike" section of this page, he will approve it.
  14. The Inspection officer will write verified in the form and will ask you to visit the payment counter.

  1. Empty the petrol tank completely. Know that carrying petrol within the premises of Indian Railways is a punishable offence. If you are caught with petrol in your bike tank you may be fined INR 1000 or can also be put behind the prison for 6 months to 2 years.
  2. Detach both the mirrors and keep it over the tank.
  3. Pack your bike with Sack (bora or bori in Hindi) packing material. Make sure that the sensitive areas of your bike such as the headlamp, tank, seat etc are properly covered. For more safety, you can also pack your bike with cardboards before covering with sack packaging.

  4. Do not cover the front and rear number plates. Make sure that both the number-plates are visible.
  5. Write clearly with a permanent marker in a bigger font on the Sack packaging, your Name/Address/Phone No/ Booking Receipt Number for easy identification.

What is the procedure after parcelling your two-wheeler?

It is up to the Railway authorities to decide which goods train to parcel the bike in. Once they board the bike on the train, you will get an SMS stating the same. The SMS will have the PNR Number, Train Name, and Train Number with which you can track the parcel.

How to collect the bike sent via Indian Railway Parcel Service

The authorities will unload the bike and keep it in the parcel warehouse at the arriving Junction ( Here it's Howrah as we have personal experience in there, in other places too the process will be the same ).

Here are the steps to follow while collecting your bike from the Howrah Junction

  1. Visit the Parcel warehouse at the arrival Junction (Here it's Howrah).
    In Howrah station, the parcel office is located at the left end of platform no: 21 in the new complex.
  2. It is advisable to book a coolie before going to the warehouse.
  3. After reaching the warehouse, give the receipt to the warehouse officer.
  4. Also, give him the original documents for inspection.
  5. The officer will ask you to pay the late penalty if any and will give you another receipt stating that the bike has been delivered to you.
  6. Now you can ask the coolie to drag the bike from the platform to outside of the railway complex.
  7. At the exit, you will be stopped by another railway officer to whom you have to give the delivery receipt.
  8. Once you are outside the railway complex, ask the coolie to unpack the bike. Remember, both the mirrors are detached and are kept on the tank. The coolie will charge around INR 100 to INR 150 which includes unpacking the bike.
  9. Now you can fill petrol in your bike. Please remember do not carry petrol inside the railway premises as it is a punishable offence.

Note:

You can carry a few litres of petrol (0.5 litres to 1 litre) in a bottle while going to collect the bike and keep it with any tea vendors/shops outside the railway station.

Or,

You can take a friend/family along and ask him/her to wait with the petrol bottle outside the railway station.

Or,

You can drag the bike to the petrol pump. The nearest petrol pump from Howrah Junction is 1.5 KMs.

What is the cost to transfer a bike from Bangalore to Kolkata by train?

Scale L is applicable if you are transferring your bike in the same train your travelling in i.e the luggage option. For Parcel options, India railway has three scales, Scale R, P, and S which is charged according to the parcel service booked.

As stated above, it is up to the authorities to decide which train they will parcel your bike in, so,

    If your parcel is booked in a train whose utilization of Brakevan is more than 60% at the originating station and which has been leased out schedule rates then Scale R will be charged.
    If your parcel is booked in a train whose utilization of Brakevan is more than 60% at the originating station and which has not been leased out schedule rates then Scale R will be charged.
    If your parcel is booked in a train whose utilization of Brakevan is less than 60% at the originating station and which has been leased out schedule rates then Scale P will be charged.
    If your parcel is booked in a train whose utilization of Brakevan is more than 60% at the originating station and which has not been leased out schedule rates then Scale S will be charged.
