Florence Falls, Litchfield National Park

The Northern Territory has a renowned reputation for being dry region, known for its sprawling expanses of dusty red earth. But what some of you might not know, is that the Northern Territory is also home to plenty of watering holes and waterfalls to enjoy. Hidden among the dry landscape, these swimming spots are a natural sanctuary, with crystal clear waterholes, warm springs and cascading falls. Take a look at our list and discover some of the greatest swimming spots in all of Australia.

Gunlom Plunge Pool

Nestled within the glorious region of Kakadu National Park, this pool is one of the most serene locations you can ever visit. Found beneath the seasonal waterfall named Waterfall Creek, the pool offers an exceptional panoramic views of the surrounding Kakadu National Park landscape. A natural plunge pool better than anything a 5-star resort could offer. The water is crystal clear, and there is even a picnic area beside the pool where you can dry off at and enjoy a picturesque lunch.

Florence Falls

Found in the Litchfield National Park it is one of the most visited waterfalls in the state. Beneath the waterfall lies the perfect swimming hole, featuring deep green waters and surrounding jagged clifftops. Simply head down the stairs through the tropical rainforest to this swimming spot, giving you both a grand bush adventure and a relaxing swimming retreat.

Buley Rockhole

A cascading collection of splendid rock pools, the Buley Rockhole is perfect for a day, an afternoon or a weekend camping trip! There are many rock pools to choose from, including smaller shallow pools great for kids, or deep ones that are perfect for groups! Many head to this spot with their esky in hand, setting up for a day of drinks and food while hopping in and out of the water.

Mataranka Thermal Pool

Skip out on a day at the spa and instead visit these thermal pools. A region with natural springs that bubble up at 34 degrees, filling the man-made pools to create the power to heal the aches and pains of visitors. The region itself is stunning, with perfectly turquoise waters, a lush shady canopy, and winding creeks and walking paths throughout. Simply slip into these waters and enjoy the gentle sound of nearby waterfalls and roaming birds as you soak up the natural beauty and ease your sores away.

Jim Jim Falls

It is one of the better-known swimming spots in the Northern Territory, found in the World Heritage–listed Kakadu National Park. It is found on the inside of a deep gorge, with the only way to travel there is via a bumpy road only fit for 4WDs. Due to its hard to get location, the waterfalls are usually quiet, but the effort to get to the falls is well worth it. Dropping down an extreme 200 metres into the falls below, the crystal green pool is breathtakingly huge!
