Wave Rock

Australia is renowned for its jaw-dropping landscapes, known as one of the best destinations for outdoor attractions. From pristine beaches to thick bushland, to finally desert landscapes, the variety is vast! Offering world-famous attractions such as the Great Barrier Reef, Uluru, and the scenic Great Ocean Road. However, some of the places that might not be as famous, but are just as unique, are the many unusual spots hidden about Australia. Including wacky rock formations, unusually coloured waters, and unexplained natural attractions.

Pink Lakes

You must see to believe these bubble-gum pink lakes, with three in total found across Western Australia’s lush landscape. The pink lakes are Lake Hillier on Middle Island, Pink Lake near Esperance, and Hutt Lagoon north of Geraldton. They truly are an extraordinary sight to see, being the striking pink color naturally, thanks to algae that live within the water, known as Dunaliella salina. When exposed to sunlight the algae produce beta-carotene, which is the red pigment found in carrots. Depending on the weather, the lakes will change from a mild lilac to pink, so no matter what time you come, you’ll get to enjoy this brightly coloured lake!

Umpherston Sinkhole

Umpherston Sinkhole, otherwise known as the Sunken Garden, is a strange and unusual garden found in Mount Gambier. Built in the remnants of a cave that collapsed due to continuous natural erosion, leaving behind a sinkhole. James Umpherston created the garden in 1886, hoping to make a pleasant escape for the people of Mount Gambier during the sweltering summer months.

Wave Rock

Surfers will come here to pray to the surfing Gods, with this remarkable Wave Rock shaped like a wave mid curl. Found in Hyden, in Western Australia, this massive granite cliff stretches out 110 metres long and 15 metres high. Estimated to be around 27 million years old, visitors come from all over to mimics the motion of surfing on this massive rock wave breaking.

Devil’s Marbles

Found in the red center of Australia is a truly breathtaking sight. Although Uluru usually gets visitors, Devil’s Marbles is also worth the visit, being just as interesting rock formation as the world-famous rock of Uluru. Being a series of large rocks that have been moulded into massive stone balls, which all balance on each other to create a truly unique attraction. It is a sacred area, with the local Aboriginal people of the region having a strong connection to the attraction, being an important region for rituals.

The Pinnacles

Travelling to Mars may be a distant dream for us, but you can do the next best thing and travel to Australia’s Pinnacles Desert. Red and orange in colour, with the entire landscape, stretched out in dry sand and red rocks, seeming like you just stepped onto an entirely new world. The thousands of eerie limestone pillars that shoot up to 4 metres tall are dotted across the land. Creating a completely unique and strange region to visit.
