Could Big Ben and Bruce Arians reunite?
Recently Walterfootball.com author Charlie Campbell wrote in his rumor blog that the Arizona Cardinals and the Houston Texans are interested in trading for Ben Roethlisberger. Without any proof or record of any other rumors, it could be that Campbell is looking to drum up some off season drama to increase his websites traffic.
WalterFootball.com often quotes "sources" for their information but who knows who they are actually taking to, it may be the janitor taking out of his... it could be a real source, or likely it could be just made up. Normally I pay no need to these rumors but for the sake of an off-season argument (what else do Cardinal fans have to do but look at mock drafts right now?) I thought it would be mildly interesting to discuss something as crazy as a trade like this.
So because it is the off-season and we have little to do but entertain ‘what ifs', would you trade for Ben Roethlisberger if the price was right?
Roethlisberger was drafted in 2004 and was drafted ten picks after Carson Palmer was drafted as the 11th overall pick. Looking at their career stats you can see many similarities. They have a similar career completion percentage (63% for Palmer, 64% for Roethlisberger), have similar yards, averages and TDs thrown. The big difference is turnovers. Big Ben has thrown more than 20 picks once in his career and that was in 2006. Palmer has broken the mark three times, most recently this year as we all painfully observed. Roethlisberger is also three years younger and will be 32 in March. Palmer will be 35 in December.
Arians also has a history working with Roethlisberger, working as Pittsburgh's offensive coordinator from 2007 to 2011. During those five years, Roethlisberger posted five 3,000 yard seasons, no more than 15 interceptions thrown and, outside of 2008, posted a QBR above 60 each year. Big Ben is a QB who can extend plays with his legs and can make all the throws. The red flags are Roethlisberger's checkered pass, including the well-known rape allegation. He is getting older and may come at a price the Cardinals are unwilling to pay.
Carson Palmer is older but is under a very manageable contract. Palmer did not have a great year but he did throw for 4,000 yards and played very well in the last half of the season. Palmer's red flags are his dwindling arm strength, his age, immobility in the pocket and his propensity for turnovers (28 total). Many believe, including myself, that next year he will improve but what about the year after that? Will he still be effective? Or would trading for a younger (though barely) QB ensure more time to find/groom a QB of the future?
