It is that time of the year again when the monsoons have hit major parts of India. Last year, the devastating effects of heavy rains destroyed many regions of Kerala. Unfortunately, the harsh effects of heavy rains continue to destroy the lives of mankind in many regions including Gujarat, Bihar, Assam, Maharashtra, Kerala, and Karnataka this year. Due to global warming, extreme weather conditions are causing more water damage than ever in the past few years.
Penguin Tank would like to give some tips to take precautions before, during and after the flood.
Before the flood
- Build an emergency kit and make a family disaster plan.
- Gather information about local relief centers and evacuation routes.
- Avoid building in a floodplain unless you elevate and reinforce your home.
- Elevate the furnace, water heater, and electric panel.
- Install a flood detection device(check valves) in the basement.
- Fold and roll up everything on to the upper floors of the building.
- Plant trees and shrubs and keep a lot of vegetation that resists soil erosion.
Assemble food, water, cash, flashlights, battery-powered radio, extra batteries, etc.
During the Flood
- Be alert and monitor your surroundings.
- Tune in to the radio for more information.
- Turn off utilities at the main power switch. Disconnect electrical appliances, gas, etc. Do not touch electrical equipment if wet or in direct touch with water.
- Evacuate immediately before the water becomes too deep.
- Do not try to walk or swim through flowing water. If you have to walk, walk where the water is not moving. Use a stick to check the firmness of the ground and balance yourself.
- Do not drive into flooded areas. If floodwaters rise around your car, abandon the car and move to higher ground.
- Stay away from downed power lines.
After the Flood
- Make sure you have permission from emergency officers to get back to your home.
- Avoid floodwaters as it may be contaminated by oil, gasoline or raw sewage. It may also be electrically charged from underground or downed power lines.
- Check for structural damage before entering the house.
- Do not turn your power on until an electrician has inspected your system.
- Do not drive through floodwaters or in areas where the water may have receded.
- Clean and disinfect everything that has got wet during the flood.
- Make sure to click or record all the damage to claim from the insurance company.
