Left and Leaving (The Weakerthans Cover) – Beat Radio

Though Beat Radio’s (@wearebeatradio) albums are a mainstay on Bandcamp’s indie charts, they aren’t exactly a buzz band. They aren’t looking to play the VMAs or land on the cover of Rolling Stone (though I’m sure they wouldn’t mind either). Beat Radio is a band that makes music for a loyal fan base that they’ve built over the past eight years with eleven releases (my favorite being The Great Big Sea).

Lead singer Brian Sendrowitz is a dad from Brooklyn who makes music because it’s something he’s done his whole life. His songwriting is simple, yet incredibly effective in its grip: brooding love songs delivered with overflowing emotion that might seem cheesy if they were sung by anyone else. Much like Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Beat Radio’s  music is polarizing. For me, Sendrowitz’s voice provides a sense of comfort in its utter nakedness. A comfort between both Sendrowitz and his music and the music and the listener.

On his latest release, Beat Radio tackles a song I hold very near and dear to my heart. There really is no one else I’d want to cover The Weakerthans’ “Left and Leaving”. This song is simply beautiful.
