As anyone who has wandered the streets of Amsterdam after nightfall will tell you, this city loves to party. From smokey little dives to thumpin' clubs, the streets are full of people making their way from one party to another. This weekend, however, is a little different.

Bass Jumping – My night out at Amsterdam Dance Event 2012

As previously mentioned, this weekend is the world-famous Amsterdam Dance Event - an annual club festival involving dozens of venues, hundreds of acts and thousands upon thousands of visitors. Some of the biggest names in the club scene are in Amsterdam for the weekend, promising some of the best nights out of the year.

There is a spirit of revelry in the streets; people are excited, happy and looking good. The Leidseplein is thronged with club-goers, Rembrantplein is literally buzzing with activity. Some of the parties have been sold out for weeks, and yet the lines of people trying to get in snake out onto the street.

I decided to try something a little different and headed to a great little spot out west - Canvas op de 7de. Nestled in the top floor of an old newspaper headquarters, Canvas (for short) offers great views of the relatively unexplored west, and the arty and colourful decorations provide a cosy backdrop for a good night out.

The headliners were a Dutch/German group of DJs known as the Cassette Collectief and they played an eclectic mix of electronic, '90s hip-hop and pop in front of a gyrating, adoring crowd. The party quickly filled up and my occasional exodus to the small yet inviting smoking room revealed even more party-goers hidden away, smoking happily in their seats, which were all salvaged from old airplanes - complete with armrest-ashtrays and hidden tray-tables.

The atmosphere was incredibly friendly - everyone was chatting and dancing with each other. The music was great and every leg in the house was shaking. Canvas is a great venue and attracts a fun crowd. If you're still dancing on Sunday morning, head over to their afterparty which runs from 7am to 2pm. Watch the sun come up from the 7th floor.

The whole city seems to be enjoying itself - the vibes are good and the party is still going on. So head on down to the city to partake in the festivities and enjoy the good spirits all around. The party only ends on the 21st.  That's Sunday night, or, more realistically, Monday morning. It's not too late to have the time of your life!
