Barry Flanagan for Sothebys Beyond Limits at Chatsworth 2012
I am a big fan of the Sothebys sculpture exhibitions that take place in the grounds of Chatsworth every Autumn and have visited many times to each in previous years.
I have admired the work of Flanagan for a few years now as he managed to capture a charming quality of Hares within his many sculptures of them. Each are cheeky chaps with characteristics that remind me of the Beatrice Potter books.
As much as I love each sculpture (there were elephants and a horse too), I can’t help but feel slightly disappointed as I look forward to the element of unknown that I normally feel at the Beyond Limits exhibitions. Every year has had a wealth of Sculptors who each had very different styles and some being rather controversial (Damien Hurst for instance), which I love.
I think if I had never been to a Beyond Limits exhibition at Chatsworth I’d feel very differently. The sculptures by Flanagan are wonderful and offer a spectacle around every corner in the gardens and I highly recommend checking them out!
