5 Quick Holiday Questions with Brad Saunders
Q) Did you have a favourite Christmas song when you were a kid?
Brad) Growing up in Newfoundland we listened to all the Christmas classics but most of the time it was from the traditional 'Kitchen jams' in our home or cabin. Everyone, and I mean everyone, in my family plays an instrument of some sort and of course there was always a violin involved!
Q) Do you have a favorite Christmas song to play live?
Brad) One Christmas song I absolutely love to perform live is a song called Born in Bethlehem by a band called Third Day. Very powerful song that really captures the meaning of Christmas!
Q) If you could partner up with any artist for a collaboration on a Christmas song, who would you choose?
Brad) Last year I was fortunate enough to have done just that. Myself and Trinity Bradshaw wrote what I consider to be one of the best songs we have written. It's called Christmas Without You which has a old classic feeling to it. Trinity's voice is powerful and convicting so I thought it was a perfect fit. The band Renegade Station heard it and loved it. They released to Country radio just in time for the Holiday season this year.
Q) What is your favorite beverage for a holiday party?
Brad) WINE! Up until about two years ago I can honestly say I had never had a full glass of wine. Now it's about as amazing as coffee to me! I don't think there is anything better than relaxing by the fire, Christmas songs and red wine.
Q) If you could only have 1 dessert after Christmas dinner, what would you choose?
Brad) They are called snowballs. I'm not sure if the rest of Canada has caught on to how incredibly amazing they really are, but just in case they haven't I will leave the recipe below. Growing up my mom made them every year! GO MAKE THEM!!
Newfoundland Snow Balls Recipe
Ingredients:3 cups sugar
3/4 cup melted butter
1 1/4 cups milk
3 cups large rolled oats
1 cup unsweetened fine coconut
12 tbsp cocoa
1 1/2 cups extra coconut
1) In a large saucepan, combine 3 cups sugar, 3/4 cup melted butter, and 1 & 1/4 cups milk and boil together gently over medium high heat for 5 minutes or until mixture reaches about 230 degrees F on a candy thermometer.
Note: Once mixture begins to boil it is very important not to stir it at all.
2) Mix together 3 cups large rolled oats, 1 cup unsweetened fine coconut, and 12 tbsp cocoa.
3) Add the boiled mixture to the dry ingredients until well combined and chill until mixture is able to be shaped into 1 1/2 inch balls. Roll the balls in additional coconut.
Makes about 4 dozen. These freeze very well.
