Baa Baa Rainbow Sheep.

By Ashleylister @ashleylister

This week’s theme is “political correctness”. Right *clears throat* This is a really complicated subject and one that easily offends people. The matters of “political correctness” for me are about people’s feelings, and where you draw the line. I am against racism, and the bullying of disabled people as that is just awful. They’re human beings and should be referred to as so. However, I guess there is a line. The phrase “I’m offended” doesn’t really do much for me. Of course I’d apologize if I did offend and politely reel in my scope of conversation, but I think there’s something endearing about not taking yourself too seriously (within reason of course. If you’re being bullied that’s entirely different)
As for the new politically correct changes I’ve heard of ( I don’t know whether it’s rumor or not) such as changing “baa baa black sheep” to “baa baa rainbow sheep” I have no words for really. I pose the question of who would get offended by that rhyme? There are black sheep. They have black wool. There’s no such thing as a bloody rainbow sheep. I wish there were it would make my local fields much more interesting. I hope someone knows where I’m coming from. I really do draw the line at racism, prejudice against culture (I love culture) and disabled people because what’s wrong with them? I see nothing wrong. They’re humans.
If you readers haven’t already noticed I’m an opinionated person but that doesn’t mean I’m easily offended. 12 years of schooling beat that out of me with a tirade of fiery scathing verbal comments. At birth I have been gifted with large sticky-out ears, a cascade of frizzy blonde curls, and have never quite reached past 5 ft 4. You can imagine the nicknames that came with those. My mother also gave me the name of Cerridwen which my classmates did not recognize as a pagan Goddess of the Moon but as a Welsh name, so I was branded as ‘sheep shagger’ for a number of years. I’ve also been called “devil-worshipper”, “stupid hippy”, “filthy heathen” and again, I shall censor on the others. So I’ve not exactly been acquainted with the protection of my feelings as to where I came from, what I believe in or what I look like but I don’t think anyone has. I think people should be proud of who they are. A word doesn’t have to mean anything it’s about how you receive it.  Thankyou for reading :)
