Ayurvedic Eating

We often call breakfast the king of all meals. Most of the dieticians say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. But just because this meal is important, it doesn’t mean that you skip the other meals. Many people think that eating at night can make them fat. So, they stop having dinner. But you should not do this.

According to ayurveda, night meal is something that you should be very careful about. Since night meal is the last meal of the day, it is important that you have it at the proper time. It is equally important to make the right choice of food.

The last part of the day is dominated by kapha. So, whatever food you eat at this time should be able to balance the kapha instead of increasing it.

Kapha Dosha – Foods to Avoid:

There are some foods that you should avoid eating at night because they can cause an imbalance in the kaphs dosha. Some of the foods that you should avoid are junk food, oily food, frozen foods, non-vegetarian foods, ice-creams, curd, heavy-to-digest foods and so on. Even if you eat such foods at night,. Make sue that you eat only a small quantity of such food items. Eating ore of these foods can cause an imbalance in the body and lead to certain complications like:

  • Weight gain
  • A runny nose when you get up in the morning.
  • Cough and cold. If you are already suffering from cold and cough, these foods can make things even worse for you.
  • Vomiting sensation.
  • Indigestion
  • Allergies
  • Excessive salivation in the morning.

Eventually, wrong eating habits can cause the formation and accumulation of toxic substances in the body.  This can give rise to a lot of health complications.

If you are suffering from any of the complications mentioned above, it is time that you take care of yourself. Sometimes, by making slight adjustments in your diet pattern, you can cure these conditions.

What to Eat at Night?

If you are wondering what are the healthy foods to eat at night, read on and you will know.

  • Try to eat food that is easy to digest at night. It is best to have foods that are healthy and low in carbohydrates at night. These will get easily digested.
  • If you eat curd at night, avoid it and try to have buttermilk instead. Try to eat chapattis at night instead of rice. This is because chapattis get digested easily and quickly.
  • Make sure that you do not overstuff yourself. You should have food in limited quantities.
  • Try to have more dal, green leafy vegetables, curry leaves and a small amount of ginger in the food you take at night.
  • Salt is said to increase the retention of water in the body. Therefore, try to cut down the intake of salt as much as possible.
  • Spices can increase the warmth in your body. So, make sure that you include spices in your food.
  • Try to reduce the intake of sugar. Instead of sugar you can use honey.
  • If you drink milk before you sleep, have milk that is low in fat. You should boil milk before you drink it. Never drink milk without boiling. This is because boiling makes it easier to digest. You can add a little ginger or cardamom to milk before you boil it. This way the mucus generating properties of milk is reduced.
  • Never drink cold milk, always drink it when it is still warm.

One thing to keep in mind when you have dinner is that whatever you eat you should not get the feeling of heaviness in the stomach. Your stomach should feel light. This way you will be able to sleep properly.

Do you think eating at night may make you fat? It could do so, because you are not doing any exercises or physical activities during the night time.

So, your body requires less energy. So, if you eat large quantities of food at night, the energy thus produced is stored in the body in the form of fat. This can lead to obesity or gain in weight.

It is not only ayurveda, but even the modern science suggests that you should eat light food at night.

Ayurveda Diet Plan – Tips for Good Health:

  1. Eat only when you feel hungry.
  2. Eat at regular intervals.
  3. Eat only after the food you have taken is properly digested. Some of the symptoms that will help you know this are:
  • Clear belching
  • Lightness in the stomach
  • Feeling hunger and thirst
  • You will feel enthusiastic rather than feeling lazy or dull
  1. Have a pinch of rock salt and ginger just before you take food. This helps in the digestion.
  2. Have a balanced diet including sweet, sour, salt, pungent bitter and astringent tastes.
  3. Have the food according to the taste. It should be in the order starting from sweet, sour, salt, pungent, bitter and astringent.
  4. Eating fast can make you eat more food. Eating slow will make you eat less. So, moderate pace of eating is the right way. If you want to lose weight, you can eat slowly.
  5. Have water in-between food rather than having it before or after food.
  6. It is better to end your meals with a little milk, dairy product or a sweet. This will help in calming the Pitta.
