Date night. Saw "To Rome With Love," Woody Allen's latest, at The Parkway. The movie takes aim at phony thinkers of big thoughts, the moral hypocrisy of high-end society, celebrity worship, et cetera. If it had scored direct hits, you would still have to say, in fairness, that these are easy targets. Several intertwined plots do not add up to a story. The title suggests the whole enterprise is just an excuse to go to Rome, which reminds me of what James Joyce said about The Eternal City: It's like a man who lives by charging admission to view his grandmother's corpse.
