One of the most popular smartphone in the budget range of around Rs. 10,000 lately is Asus ZenFone Max. Launched back in January 2016, the phone boasted a whopping 5000mAh capacity battery with Snapdragon 410, 2 GB Ram, 5.5 inch LCD IPS display and a 13 Megapixel primary snapper. The phone has been the most popular smartphone of Asus but let's face it, it was getting old and outdated because of all the new smartphones of the same price range in the market.

The Asus ZenFone Max features a 5.5 Inch TFT LED Display with a resolution of 720 x 1280 pixels which converts to a PPI rate of 267 pixels per inch which is a bit low, but it is for maintaining the tagline of the phone; #LiveUnplugged. The display resolution is kept low to achieve the maximum battery life of the phone.
Design
Basically, the design of the new ZenFone Max is same as the previous version. That means it has the same detachable back cover; but with a premium leather feel, gold frame along the sides and the trademarked concentric circles chin of Asus. The only change to the exterior look of the phone is that Asus has added two more color options for the new version; Blue and Orange.
Rest of the things remains the same as the old model; volume keys and lock button are placed at the right, Micro-USB port is still at the bottom and the 3.5mm audio jack for connecting sound accessories remains at the top. The rear panel is detachable so you can buy all the four colors (Black, White, Orange, and Blue) and use them day to day according to your choice and style. The beast is being powered by a 5000mAh non-removable polymer battery. The battery can provide enough juice to the phone to easily keep it running for 2 days. On board, there is a Snapdragon 615 Octa Core processor assisted by 2GB/3GB Ram dependent upon the variant. The dimensions of the phone remain at 77.5 x 156 x 10.55 mm (WxDxH). The phone weighs at 202 grams including the battery.
Software
The new and refreshed ZenFone Max will treat the fans with Android Marshmallow garnished with Asus' Zen UI out of the box. The Zen UI is updated and for us it is a little bit complex and intrusive. However, many key features of Android Marshmallow are present on the device.
Camera
The camera on the device is same as the previous version; it features a 13 Megapixel Primary Snapper assisted by a dual tone LED flash and an IR blaster for laser auto focus. The camera performance is very good. The snapper can produce high quality photos in indoor environments but outdoor photos get a little bit washed exposure. However, the quality of the photos is still amazing for a smartphone of this price range. Below are some camera samples.
There is a 5 Megapixel snapper on the front for selfies and video calling. The front snapper is also quite good and is being made by Asus considering the selfies trend and how important it is for users to have a good quality front snapper now-a-days.
Pixelmaster 2.0 is being pre-installed on the device as the software side camera companion, and it produces high quality images with the help of laser auto-focus.

Asus has released two variants for the refreshed version of the ZenFone Max priced at Rs. 9,999 and Rs. 12,999. The low priced version features 2 Gigabytes of Ram and the higher priced version features 3 Gigabytes of Ram. The Ram is the only difference you will get by paying an extra sum of Rs. 3000.
Verdict
The Asus ZenFone Max is undoubtedly one of the best choices for the price range of Rs. 10,000. Though the extra sum of Rs. 3000 for extra RAM doesn't make any sense to us. Asus could have improved the display a little bit but that would affect the battery life. The battery performance is very good but does not meet the old ZenFone Max because of the new processor. The Snapdragon 615 has improved the performance of the device very much but it affects the battery life. The battery can still provide 2 full days without needing to charge the device which is very good. The charger provided by Asus is very week and takes around 5 hours to charge the device fully. You must select an external charger because the default charger takes forever to charge the device. The camera performance of the device is also very good for this price range.
Conclusion
The device is perfect for those looking for a smartphone with amazing battery performance and decent camera at this price range. Though, the 3GB Ram version of the device is not worth it for us as 3000 is not the amount you have to pay for 1 gigabyte of extra Ram.
