Ask Lex: Valentine’s Day Gifts That Aren’t Chocolate Or Flowers

Reader: I always get my girlfriend the same thing and want to be less predictable for Valentine's Day this year. What are some ideas that are more special than flowers or chocolate?

I'll start with saying that I personally love flowers for any occasion. So, they're always appreciated. I can understand you wanting to break out of the box and surprise your girlfriend with something new though. I have one word: experiences.

My boyfriend and family have all gotten me amazing gifts over the years, but I have to admit that they all meld into one when I look back. I am sure they feel the same way about things I have gotten for them. The only things that always stick out are the experiences. Whether it was an Alvin Ailey performance with my sister, a broadway play with my mother, a jazz concert with my dad, or a music festival with my boyfriend. Those are the things I will never forget.

It's not to say I don't (or they don't) appreciate the material things, but those things don't always stand the test of time. Flowers and chocolate especially don't because let's be real - flowers die and the chocolate will be eaten. If you do want to shake things up a bit here are a few ideas.

Cooking Class

Key thing about this is that you both either like to cook or have an interest in learning. Cooking together is a fun activity that you can continue once the class is over. It is a great way to connect without making it a big thing.
PS - After the class, you'll save a lot of money eating at home. Just sayin'.

Couples Massage

Unwind together with a relaxing couples massage. Most spas have areas you can lounge after your service is complete so you don't need to rush out as soon as the massage is over. You can make a nice day of it!

Concert (You'll Both Enjoy)

Plan a dinner near the concert venue to make it a true date night. It's important though to pick an artist that you both like. Mostly for the sake of shared interests. Also because of how miserable would be sitting through a Taylor Swift (or any artist you're not a fan of) concert just because she likes it. It should be something you both appreciate.

Explore Your City

Cheap date? Yes. Memorable? Definitely. I don't know about you, but most of my city exploration is mandatory. Life events, obligations, quick meals out. Life gets busy, so it hard to just take a day to just enjoy each other and your surroundings. Carve out an entire day to explore. Go to museums, try a new restaurant(s), visit a landmark that you consider "touristy". No matter what you do it will be a great day spent together.
