burger boy and I was invited to The Laneway Lounge’s launch of their little black cocktail book at the end of May. Entry into The Laneway Lounge that day was all very mysterious. Just like speakeasies during the United States Prohibition era in the 1920s / early 30s, there was a password to get in to the venue.
My password was “Blind Pig” which is another name for speakeasies…
In those days liquor was hidden and disguised in all sorts of random ways, it wouldn’t be surprising to find them inside cane sticks and books behind the bar.
The Laneway Lounge disguised some of their cocktails featured in the Little Black Book in a similar fashion at the launch. Some cocktails were served in empty baked beans and peeled tomato cans…

burger boy tried the Millionaire cocktail which was an apricot brandy – the idea behind the name is that after 4 or 5 you feel like a millionaire

burger boy had heaps of little black book cocktails, I just had a small taste of the champagne sorbet and espresso cocktail before getting distracted by all the amazing food. Keep scrolling to check these out – the maple glazed pork belly donut was sooo good and the cheese toasties although simple were just what I felt like after all my sweet mocktails.
As award winning mixologist Grant Collins showed us how to make a selection of The Laneway Lounge’s Little Black Book cocktails we learnt some fun facts about the prohibition period. I learnt that the brown paper bag we often take home from the liquor stores originated from the Prohibition era and Al Capone made $60 million annually from bootlegging during this period.

The Laneway Lounge is one of my fav Perth venues, I love my jazz and the food is always spectacular in taste and presentation. I’m heading back there with some girlfriends in a few weeks and I’ve just purchased burger boy’s mum a voucher for her 60th as she loves her jazz.
