Dr Adebayo,

They recently found a cyst in my breast by an ultrasound and told me not to worry. I do have some concern because my breast has developed a large indentation on the side. They told me I have dense breast. I am 57 years old and had a hysterectomy at age 29.

Hello Dawn,

Thank you for your question.

Cysts(i.e fluid filled sacs) in the breast are most usually benign and very rarely cancerous. While benign cysts may be worrisome, they usually do not require treatment unless they become big or painful. Treatment options include aspiration where a needle is used to removed the fluid in the sac or excision wherein the whole sac and the fluid content are surgically removed.

In your case, your concern is very understandable because it appears whatever is happening in that breast rather than getting better or staying the same is deteriorating with time as evidenced by the recent development of a “large” indentation.

I suggest you see doctor to discuss your concerns with him/her. You may also seek a second opinion.

All the best!

Dr Adebayo
