About the Position:
The position is located in the Fort Carson Directorate of Emergency Services, with duty location in Fort Carson, Colorado. This job provides a customer focused, highly effective program to eliminate and subdue every day hazards to life and property utilizing state of the art procedures and equipment. Emergency medical, hazardous material response, structural/wild land firefighter, aircraft crash/rescue and fire prevention are a few of the services provided.

Maximum Entry Age (MEA):
The MEA for Firefighters is 37. An employee originally hired into a covered FF position must be hired by the last day of the month s/he reaches 37.
Maximum Re-entry Age:
An employee who previously served on a covered position may be rehired past the MEA as long as s/he is able to complete 20 years of covered service by her/his mandatory retirement age. The maximum re-entry age for the individual is calculated by determining the total amount of time s/he has served on a covered position and subtracting that from age 57 if a FF. The employee’s current age is compared to the calculated maximum re-entry age to determine if s/he can be rehired into the covered position.
Waivers to Maximum Entry Age
MEA may be waived, but only under specific circumstances and only if approved by the authorized entity. Waivers to MEA for FFs must be approved by local Command.
MANDATORY SEPARATION: An employee who occupies a special retirement position is subject to mandatory separatin when all the following minimum conditions are met:
(a) Age 57
(b) Completion of 20 years of creditable service as a firefighter
Mandatory separation is effective on the last day of the month in which the minimum conditions are met. Employees who are subject to mandatory separation are given a notice period of at least 60 days.
Duties
As a Firefighter (Basic Life Support/Hazardous Material Technician), you will operate all assigned fire-fighting and emergency equipment such as fire apparatus and emergency rescue equipment (i.e., Jaws of life, power tools, Hydraulic tools); drive emergency vehicles to and from the scene of emergencies by a pre-determined route or as directed by the Lead or Supervisory Firefighter/s; drive and operate various types of firefighting apparatus including pumpers, Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) vehicles, and aerial ladder trucks with responsibility for safety of personnel riding in the truck to the scene of the fire.Duties and responsibilities include work in structural, airfield wild land firefighting specializations, hazardous materials operations and emergency medical care and treatment.Area of work encompasses a large installation of approximately 17M square feet of buildings, some of which are combustible construction and of national historic value, and some 373,834 acres of maneuver and down range training areas.You will function as a fully qualified Hazardous Materials Technician and serve as a member on the Hazardous Materials Emergency Response Team; perform general maintenance and care of assigned equipment to assure a constant state of readiness; assist the injured during medical emergencies, which range in complexity from minor cuts and sprains to life threatening injuries or illnesses; provide fire protection and prevention practices to support the storage of highly combustible fuels and different types of hazardous materials stored or in use; serve as crew supervisor in the absence of immediate supervisor or when workload dictates.

Experience required: To qualify based on your work experience, your resume must describe at least one year of experience which prepared you to do the work in this job. Specialized experience is defined as: operating firefighting equipment which reflects understanding of fire behavior and extinguishing agents; using fixed fire protection systems and associated equipment and specialized tools; operating all equipment during emergencies under extremely stressful conditions; operating a variety of pumps and heavy hand held equipment as well as self-contained or other types of breathing apparatus; performing rescue and decontamination and providing EMT services under a variety of conditions; carrying out orders, effectively fighting fires, and using and maintaining assigned firefighting equipment under conditions of heavy physical exertion and extreme heat and dust in all kinds of weather. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).
You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency (knowledge, skills, abilities) in the following areas:

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower (GS-06) grade (or equivalent).
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement based on experience alone–no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
