Armchair BEA: What About Genres?
It's another day of Armchair BEA!
I had a fun time last night looking through everyone's introduction posts! If you'd like to share yours with me, just put a link in the comments and I'll definitely check it out!
So today's topic is: Genre Fiction
On the Armchair BEA website, they ask questions pertaining to genres and what draws you to them.
What Draws You to a Genre?I'm not one that will just say "oh, I love this genre!" because usually, I'll read one book in the genre and I'll love it, and then the next book I read in that genre I will hate. Honestly, I don't fall into the "genre" trap. I like to specify my genre choices as "young adult," because honestly, that's what I read!
Regardless of that, there are still a lot of things that draw me towards certain genres or sub-genres. Hype is a big thing. You see people fawning over books about zombies and of course you're going to want to try it out. A lot of time it's just peer pressure. (Don't worry - it's positive peer pressure!) Besides this, trends are a big thing that gear me towards certain areas. If you see a lot of books coming out with one type of theme, you know it's a big trend.
Keeping An Eye For TrendsThere are many ways that I keep up with trends. First of all, I get weekly emails from Publisher's Weekly which help me keep up with all the trends. Then I look at what my libraries are getting. A lot of times, they only get books that fall under certain trends. This helps me distinguish which books fall under a certain trend. And lastly, just reading reviews. For example, if every other review on your feed is about mermaids, you know there is a definite mermaid trend. It's a good idea to keep up with trends. When a new one surfaces, try it out! You'll never know what you'll like!
My Favorites & RecommendationsThere are a lot of genres that I love. First of all, young adult, obviously. It's got the perfect balance of action, romance, and everything else. I don't like the new adult very much because of the heavy romance.
Narrowing down my choices, I like science fiction and fantasy a lot. Also, contemporary is a big hit for me. All the books I get tend to fall into one of these three categories.
From those genres, it goes down into more subdivisions. Under science fiction I particularly like dystopian. It's kind of my favorite genre of all time. Under fantasy I like some high fantasy, but my calling is paranormal or supernatural books. I just love them! And for contemporary, I like high school romances, or books about mental/physical issues.
So those are my thoughts about the different genres! Can't wait to hear what you all think about them!
