This an interesting quote from actress Jodie Foster.
Most people are somewhat familiar with her, at least, and there might be certain reasons she said that.
However, regardless of why she said it, "normal" like something interesting to think and blog about.
It begs the question:
Do you think you are normal?
Before you answer that you might want to ponder if you want to be normal and if it is preferred.
The author is in no hurry to consider himself normal, for example.
Do You Consider Yourself "Normal"?
Have you ever sat down and tried to define "normal"? This is what interests the author in discussing the topic. It seems obvious until you sit down and think about it. (The essence of these posts).
Most people think they would want to be normal, but what would you base it on?
Is "normal" based on what the majority does, or on what you are familiar with, or maybe on what part of the world you live in? Would it include both good and bad things - or events?
For example, if most people considered themselves superstititious, then is being superstitious normal behavior?
This post looks at how subjective some things are in life, and how you should look further into things for yourself. The author is glad to say he is not normal. This sounds a bit odd to some people. Wouldn't a person want to be normal, they ask?
The response is - maybe at a young age, but as a person develops they don't necessarily have to fit in or be "normal" to be fulfilled.
Here are some things about myself people say are not normal. Things like,
- preferring colder weather to warmer weather
- preferring to spend a lot of time by myself
- not having an interest in cars
- being more interested in God's Word than in money or status
- being a vegetarian
Some people say these things are weird, and that is okay. However, I don't think they take anything away from me.
Yes, I like winter and I like being single. Those seem like preferences, though. Not everyone would agree, but does that make me less of a person?
This post could go into a discussion about following the crowd or not. But I think it is better to think through things than to just do what everyone else does.
Sticking out doesn't necessarily mean something is wrong with you.
When Jodie Foster said normal is something to get away from, maybe she just implied she likes to think on her own. If that is the case, I agree.
Most people want to be normal before they think about it.
