Are the Steelers Officially Outdated?

By Kipper @pghsportsforum
Watching the other games in Week 1, Ravens-Broncos, Packers-49ers, Eagles-Redskins, Chargers-Texans, etc, how can anyone come to the conclusion that the NFL isn't a vertical, pass-heavy, score fast, score often league? How can anyone say that time of possession and yards allowed on defense are not overrated stats? Rushing yards have never meant less in the NFL.
It would seem the Steelers still haven't gotten the message.
The Steelers offense is a clown show. The offensive line has pedigree, but isn't proven enough to protect a franchise QB. The Steelers have no #1 WR, and Sanders is proving he's no better than a #3. But the Steelers don't care. Every offensive drive has to be this long, 10 minute, grind-it-out drive. Ben has been reduced to check downs and screen passes, because the Steelers would much rather put the games in the hands of Isaac Redman. And Markus Wheaton, the guy who could stretch the field, isn't being played because he's a rookie, and the Steelers outdated tradition has deemed "he hasn't earned it!" Yes, I know Le'Veon Bell is hurt, but do you honestly expect a rookie RB to carry an offense in today's NFL?
The Arians offense had it flaws, but it was never this bad. That offense's big-play potential put fear into other defenses. The Haley offense just plays scared. This offense thinks as long as it merely wins time of possession, they will grind out low-scoring wins.
The Steelers may have gotten away with going old-school longer than expected, but now it isn't working. Now isn't the time to worry about how the Steelers won 40 years ago, or maybe even 5 years ago. Now is the time the Steelers need to adapt to the current NFL, because the NFL is not going to adapt to the Steelers. Old-school Steelers fans can complain all they want, the NFL doesn't care. Even Art Rooney II can complain about it, the NFL still won't care. If the Steelers do not adapt, they will get left behind and very quickly become an irrelevant team.
