Ants don’t have lungs at all.

Posted by Vikas Acharya on January 23, 2026

So how do ants breathe?

  • They use a system of tiny tubes called tracheae
  • Air enters through small holes along their body called spiracles
  • Oxygen moves directly to their cells — no lungs, no blood carrying oxygen

Why this works

  • Ants are very small, so oxygen doesn’t have to travel far
  • Diffusion is enough to supply their bodies
  • This is also why insects can’t grow super large under today’s oxygen levels

Fun extra

  • Ants also don’t have blood like ours — they have hemolymph
  • It doesn’t transport oxygen
