Ants don’t have lungs at all.
Posted by Vikas Acharya on January 23, 2026
So how do ants breathe?
- They use a system of tiny tubes called tracheae
- Air enters through small holes along their body called spiracles
- Oxygen moves directly to their cells — no lungs, no blood carrying oxygen
Why this works
- Ants are very small, so oxygen doesn’t have to travel far
- Diffusion is enough to supply their bodies
- This is also why insects can’t grow super large under today’s oxygen levels
Fun extra
- Ants also don’t have blood like ours — they have hemolymph
- It doesn’t transport oxygen
