Who Do We Tell First?

When it’s time to announce your engagement, you’ll probably want to start with the people closest to you and your new fiancé. Your parents, siblings, grandparents and best friends will be so happy to be the first to hear the wonderful news!

How Do We Spread the Word?

The most personal and immediate way to tell your family and closest friends is with a phone call. If you have family and friends with whom you usually communicate via email or text messaging, then it’s perfectly acceptable to announce your engagement to them this way. Keep in mind, though, that some loved ones prefer to hear big news over the phone. So if there is even the slightest possibility that someone you know will be offended, be sure to put them on your “to-call” list. Otherwise, email and text away!

When you have told those closest to you – should you choose to really spread the word – you can then announce it through social media. You can create a unique engagement announcement and share it through Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or Pinterest. It can also be a quick post saying ’he proposed’ and ‘she said yes’! Be ready to be showered with all those congratulations messages!

Let’s Celebrate with an Engagement Party!

Engagement parties are a great way for the families of the newly engaged couple to become acquainted. And of course a great way to let the celebrations begin! Appropriate timing to host an engagement party is 2–4 months after the proposal. The bride’s family, the groom’s family, the engaged couple, or some combination often host the engagement party. A quick piece of engagement party etiquette advice: A guest at your engagement party will probably expect an invitation to your wedding, so plan this first guest list wisely.
