I’ve been looking forward to this novel for quite some time. I’ve known people who say this is one of their favorite books. And as much as I enjoyed my first experience reading Evelyn Waugh (A Handful of Dust) I don’t expect this one to be any different.
On The Road by Jack Kerouac (11 votes)
Another beat writer, eh? Do you guys hate me? Just kidding. I read On The Road during my early 20s, not coincidentally after driving on a solo adventure across the United States, and I loved it. In fact, it was my favorite novel at the time. I’m curious, though, if I’ll think different of On The Road, now in my late 30s in a completely different stage of life.
Midnight’s Children by Salman Rushdie (10 votes)
No experience with Midnight’s Children, though I seem to have read about it being a controversial novel. Having now finished Naked Lunch, I think the standard for “controversial novel” is through the stratosphere, at least in my view.
White Teeth by Zadie Smith (8 votes)
I know nothing about this one, other than the fact it’s one of the most recent published novels on the list. White Teeth hit the stores in 2000.

I loved reading through your comments and how many of you were watching out for me after reading Naked Lunch. Yes, I do need a mental break after reading that novel, and thanks for thinking about that.
