K ādu is Sula wines first wine with a cause.
Kādu (pronounced kaa-du, means wild in Kannada), and this wine is made entirely in Karnataka. The flagship Sula wines are made in Nasik in Maharashtra, and Sula's presence in Nasik made it quite a happening place.
Now, with Sula venturing into the Channapatna district in Karnataka, I am hoping this would be the next hot spot for wine tasting or wine tours, maybe even a Kādufest could be on the horizon!
Anyway, that's looking a little too much into the future at the moment. For now, let me just go into the wine-tasting session we had at Hotel Gateway, where we got to sample their delicious wines.
Saving the tiger with a little wine
With each bottle of wine that is sold, Kādu contributes towards tiger conservation in Karnataka. To ensure the optimum end-use of the funds contributed, Sula is collaborating with Mud on Boots, a pioneering initiative by the Sanctuary Nature Foundation that is designed to empower and support grassroots conservationists across India.
About our wine tasting session
Our wine tasting started with the Kādu Sauvignon Blanc, which was really light and fruity with hints of passion fruit, cut grass, and green peppers. We then tried the Kādu Chenin Blanc, which was the popular favorite.
Kerry Damskey - ace winemaker, and all-round cool dude walked us through the entire wine tasting session patiently explaining all the wine details to us.
After the two white wines, we tried the Kādu Shiraz Rose and the Kādu Cabernet Shiraz. The Shiraz Rose was a lovely coppery color, and had a luscious berry flavor - my favorite. K preferred the oaky flavor of the Cabernet Shiraz.
Overall, we enjoyed all the wines. I think my favorites were the Shiraz Rose and the Kadu Sauvignon Blanc. My preference runs to light and fruity wines, I think.
But that's the best thing about Kādu wines - they have an option for every palate, and at a very reasonable price point too.
Pricing
The Kādu collection is available in two different sizes - 750 ml and 375 ml. The price is approximately Rs.350 for a 375 ml bottle and Rs.650 for a 750 ml bottle.
So, for less than a grand, you can enjoy a delicious glass of wine, and save the tiger, one sip at a time.
I think this is a fabulous price point for some very decent wine, indeed.
