Amsterdam Struts Its Stuff on the Catwalk

By Amsterdam City Tours

AFW-header-finalThat's right! It's time once again for Amsterdam Fashion Week.

Amsterdam might not be the first place that comes to mind when you envision haute couture, but it's no slouch either.

The goal of AFW is to pin Amsterdam on the map as a destination for fashion.

As we shared in this post, Amsterdam was named the 6th most fashion-forward country in the world back in 2011, so they're obviously doing something right.

Now in it's 19th edition, Amsterdam Fashion Week - a bi-annual event - is holding its summer edition from July 6-16. The eleven-day event will include catwalk shows, trade fairs, presentations and lectures, and  of course some fabulous parties. The event is going on inside De Gashouder (a large industrial building in the Westergasfabriek) and surrounding areas.

The kick-off was this past weekend with what is fittingly referred to as Fashion Weekend, when the general public gets to join in and rub elbows with some of the world's best dressed.

Dedicated to 'talent & innovation,' this edition includes both the former and the latter from Dutch designers like Spijkers & Spijkers, Anne de Grijff, Winde Wienstra, Allen Vos, Dieter de Cock, ByDanie, and Claes Iverson.

There's also a special program called Downtown that will be open to the public in an attempt to bring AFW "from catwalk to sidewalk."

Besides the exclusive shows and Downtown's pop-up catwalks, there's also this edition's Business Programme featuring jeans experts from all across the globe as well as workshops, lectures, and presentations to inspire innovation and creativity at the Fashion LAB.

There's something for everyone at Amsterdam Fashion Week. Now if we could just get our hands on some VIP passes...
