Twenty-four year old, Nashville born composer Peter Barbee is better known by his stage name, Among Savages. His 2011 release, The Wanderings of An Illustrative Mind, blew away attentive listeners with twelve perfectly structured songs and a truly whole-sounding album. His music varies from track to track, but the ongoing pattern of sound is cinematic, drawing comparisons to Arcade Fire, Bon Iver and Yann Tiersen.
This fellow has a mysterious knack for composing sounds, creating a new brand of earthy, electronic music. Combine this with some of the best, most personal lyricism I’ve heard in the past few years and a relatable, smooth falsetto voice, and Among Savages has created an addictive, enjoyable album. From “Forgive Me Lord” and “Only You”, the album’s more upbeat, bass-heavy tracks, to the quiet, simplistic diddies such as “Sun Greets The Sky”, The Wanderings of An Illustrative Mind is wonderfully eclectic and ready for your ears.
