The Los Angeles Fire Department Air Operations Unit operates a fleet of aircraft out of Van Nuys Airport, including five of these new AW139 helicopters which replaced the  Bell 412s used previously.  Instead of the familiar “Bambi Bucket”, these have a 480 gallon belly tank.  Introduced in 2003, this helicopter was designed and developed jointly by Agusta and Bell Helicopters and marketed as the Agusta-Bell AB139, it was re-designated the AW139 when Bell withdrew from the project.
