Adventures in Metalsmithing: a Ring for My Sister

By Whollykao @whollyKao

01-whollykao_ring 02-whollykao_ring I’m very excited to share about this ring I made my sister. I had been wanting to make her one for a while.

The stone is made of quartz with iron in it, which is what gives it the pretty pink and gray hues. The ring may look really simple to make, but it took me a while. I can honestly say it was a really good learning experience.

I learned that I need to plan out my design before I start creating. I had originally intended to set the stone at a right angle to the band, but poor planning meant I placed the seam of the stone’s bezel right in the spot where I wanted to solder the ring band on. And soldering the band onto the bezel at the seam would make for a weakly constructed ring.

So I soldered the stone on sideways, and added the spheres on the sides to make it look more intentional. Like I said, I really like how it turned out, and I think my sister does too! And in the meantime, I’ve learned that all these hours of working on a right can come to naught, if you don’t plan it out beforehand!
