About Haobam Paban Kumar

Haobam Paban Kumar stays in Manipur and makes film about his birthplace, the Northeastern state of India that shares its border with Myanmar. His films are a reflection of the contemporary issues of one of the most politically disturbed places in India.

Haobam came to limelight with the film 'AFSPA 1958' based on a controversial act that gives the Indian Army a license to kill anybody on mere suspicion. The film won several international awards including the International Jury and FIPRESCI award at the 9th Mumbai International FIlm Festival 2006. The film also won the Golden Lotus for the Best Documentary at the 56th National Film Awards 2008, India. Some of his films are- A Cry in the Dark, The First leap, Mr INDIA, Floating Life etc. His films have been widely shown in the film festival amd events across the globe. Haobam has 5 National Film Awards and 6 Indian Panorama selections to his credit. His latest documentary 'Floating Life' won the prestigious Golden Conch for the Best Documentary at the 14th Mumbai International Film Festival 2016. 'Loktak Lairembee (Lady of the lake)' is his debut fiction feature film which was World Premiered at the prestigious 21st Busan International Film Festival in the Asian News Current Section.
