Story: Emma starts as we see how Emma Woodhouse (Taylor-Joy) uses her high society position to help with matchmaking, getting great pleasure from seeing people together, while caring for her father Mr Woodhouse (Nighy). When Emma makes a new friend in Harriet Smith (Goth) she tries to pull the strings to arrange her a man, while Emma finally starts to think about her own future with the family friend Mr Knightley (Flynn) being the person most attracted to them both.

Characters & Performances – Emma Woodhouse is a young woman that has been playing matchmaker in high society for years, she enjoys help and medalling in relationships, seeing it as her entertainment, never finding herself wanting her own love. Most people up to her for respect, by being her friend means you have elevated to a new social level in the area even if some of the people on the same level of her question her actions. Anya Taylor-Joy is the highlight of the film, where she is both captivating and filled with the arrogance of her position in the world. We do get to meet a host of other people who are trying to fight for their place in high society showing the shallow mindset of the people involved.
Story – The story here follows a young woman in high society that enjoys her time matchmaking instead of settling down herself, she enjoys her position of power and sees each chapter of love something she wants to help make happen. This is based on the classic novel of the same name that does put the full spotlight on Emma and her actions, it shows how the high society were always stuck up and always putting their own lives above anyone else relying on the people who keep their homes spotless to do most of the work. This is one that will appeal to the fans of the period dramas, but if you are tired of seeing how stuck up people used to act, this isn’t going to be one for you.
Themes – Emma is a comedy romance drama that does get to poke fun and the high society and their quirks that control their lives, the most impresses part of the film is the costumes and styles used to show us how the characters would have dressed and looked in the same era.
Final Thoughts – Emma is an easy watch poke at high society that will help complete the ridiculous way of life they once had.
