The Atlanta group formed in 1988 and were largely credited with the popularity of Southern hip hop. Their sound was conceived as a stark contrast to the gangsta rap that was prominent in the early 90s, with positive, african-flavoured songs focusing on spirituality, peace, unity and love.
They split in 1996, but reformed in 2000 and continue to record and perform with a slightly altered line-up.
