I’ve written before about how special holidays were to me growing up, and how careful my parents were to create meaningful traditions within our home.
Valentine’s Day was no exception.
Dad gave us flowers with a loving note, and mom always set up the table for a beautiful, delicious breakfast. She always piled sweet gifts around each of our plates and decorated the table with table cloths doilies, confetti, glitter, ribbon curls, flower, candles, etc. Everything was red and pink, we looked forward to it every year.
It was also really wonderful and for girls like me who rarely had a boyfriend – they always made me feel special
I vividly remember one year her giving us these little red heart-shaped tins with little candies inside. We would also get pink socks, Big Red gum, red tic-tacs, pink foil chocolates, etc.
We also got to have a treat for breakfast – donuts, or crepes, or french toast.
So, I really wanted to make donuts for my little guy this year.
Here’s my recipe for {nearly} Homemade Donuts.
We were having out of town friends over for breakfast later that morning, so I got up extra early to have the table all ready for Henry and Miles.
Once they had their breakfast, I switched gears and prepared the 2nd breakfast for our guests who were coming at 9.
In order to make this all do-able, I decorated the table and prepped all of the food the night before.
Usually when I think of fruit salad images of hard, bland melon and soggy grapes come to mind, with maybe a sad old strawberry if you’re lucky. I made mine fresh from pineapple, oranges, mango, kiwi, blueberries, and strawberries.
Delicious.
For the main course I made a Veggie Scramble, and uncured, nitrate/ nitrite free bacon. This is one of my favorite breakfast dishes and I love that it gets veggies in our bellies first thing in the morning. (I’ll post this recipe tomorrow!)
Organic coffee with grass-fed cream and orange juice made it just perfect.
Hank and I had agreed that we didn’t need to get each other anything, but I couldn’t resist at least buying this for him:
How did you celebrate with your family?
