A Scandal In Bohemia is possibly the only Sherlock Holmes story in which he is outwitted, and brought to a level of infatuation with a woman. One of the things that strikes me as interesting about this story that has been disposed of with more recent re-imaginings of Holmes is that he does not have time for woman.
Certainly not that he would never have interest in a woman (as this story most certainly makes clear), but it takes one that is every bit his match when it comes to mental faculties. Although, of interest, Watson states that under no circumstances does he believe Holmes would ever have a romantic interest.
Another interesting point is that this story mentions Holmes’s use of Cocaine. Another story mentions Holmes using hashish. It’s interesting that Conan Doyle would choose to include these references without there being the kind of medical research to back any claims about the drugs. Most interesting and contradictory to our current understanding of these drugs.
