Creating a relaxing home environment has become more important than ever – somewhere that can encourage our little ones the importance of slowing down for a second and stopping to smell the roses. Life has become go, go, go for all of us. The chance to switch off from it all – work, emails, social media, the internet – should be encouraged, and this can be achieved with a few very simple and very basic changes in our homes.
And we’re going to show you how:
The Kitchen
We had to start with the kitchen because the idea of it being a relaxing room is almost oxymoronic, yet the kitchen has become the hub of the house in modern times, the place where we bond as a family. When it comes to making it more relaxing, though, you can do so with very little expenditure. It is a matter of decluttering. If somewhere is a mess then that is the vibe it gives off. So start with a declutter. Then it is little things, like having a drawer in the fridge stocked with healthy snacks (not chocolate). Have some comfortable seating, a couch or hanging chair that your kids can relax in. Put some fun, but cheap, art on the walls. Have some white flowers in the middle of the table. All of these things will have a huge impact.

The Living Room
The big issue with most living room’s is that the focal point is all wrong. We tend to arrange our furniture so that everyone can have a good view of the television, which hardly helps in creating a relaxed atmosphere. So try making your bay window the focal point instead, or even the fireplace. The other crucial thing to consider is the lighting, which a simple dimmer switch can fix, as can a lamp on an end table. Lastly, why not replace your DVD selection with books. Encouraging your kid(s) to relax with a book and explore their imaginations is a great way to help them find calm, which television doesn’t.

The Bedroom
A messy bedroom is a surefire way to evoke a messy mind, so get your family into the habit of tidying up their room, and don’t let them leave the house until the bed is made. Another way to help each of you wake up relaxed is to replace your mattresses. Yeah, this can be quite expensive. Luckily for you, there is just one question you need to ask yourself, are you ready for this year’s Labor Day sales? Another thing you can do is have an electronic device curfew. We have all got into the habit of falling asleep with our phones and picking them up the moment we wake up.

The Bathroom
Your bathroom is meant to be the most relaxing room in the house because (unless you are a mom) you get to have some peace and quiet and alone time. And there are always ways to maximize this. Let is as much natural light as possible, have some house plants in there, invest in a bath pillow, hang some relaxing art on the walls and get a waterproof cover for your Kindle. As for your kids, well, if they are young then it will never be relaxing. So embrace this face and get them some bath toys.
