Happy Pi Day!!

I mean this guy => π

As in πr², that circle thing from math class.

We celebrate Pi Day on March 14th because, ha-ha, π = 3.14, and on and on.

Let’s face it, π is a bottomless pit, only it goes sideways instead of down.

Bor-ing. Unless you’ve got some kinda math fetish.

So forget Pi, let’s celebrate Pie Day instead.

We could celebrate by going out and buying a pie at a bake sale, but bake sales are hard to come by this time of year, at least here in New Hampshire. So I was thinking maybe a pie fight.

But I don’t like to get all gooey and sticky except under highly personal circumstances, so let’s do it vicariously through the movies.

Here’s a good choice: Laurel & Hardy’s The Battle Of The Century (1927).

The plot: Hardy’s a devious fight manager who takes out an insurance policy on his wimpy fighter, played by Laurel.

Hardy keeps dropping banana peels in Laurel’s path, hoping he’ll have an accident so Hardy can collect on the insurance. When a pie delivery man slips on one of the peels, it triggers an epic pie battle.

Cool bit of trivia: Nobody thought to preserve silent films back when they were made. Most were either melted down or just allowed to decompose.

Battle was a “two-reeler,” only 20 minutes long. Like many silents, it was considered a lost classic. But someone found a copy of the first reel back in the 70’s, and the missing second reel miraculously turned up in 2014.
