Taiwanese photographer Will Ho stumbled upon a beautiful natural phenomenon when he was on holiday in the Maldives Islands - a stretch of beach covered in millions of bioluminescent phytoplankton. These tiny organisms glow similarly to fireflies and tend to emit light when stressed, such as when waves crash or when they are otherwise agitated. This phenomenon and its chemical mechanisms have been well documented and there have been recent articles explaining why it happens.
