A Day Trip to the “Agriturismo” La Falda in Campogalliano, Modena

One of my dear friends asked me what she should get my son for his birthday. I replied “nothing”. He has SO MANY toys that I buy liberally from the Used Toy Sale here in Modena, that the thought of her paying full price for a toy just seems strange. Besides, we took him to Rome for a week (read about the trip here) to do all sorts of fun kid’s stuff….isn’t that enough!?

The best gift she could give him was her company and the experience of staying with her and her beautiful family. Her daughter is exactly one year older than my son, so we decided as a birthday gift to both kids we’d plan a day at an Agriturismo and Fattoria Didattica!. Wondering what a Fattoria Diddattica is? Agriturismo La Falda

We decided on going to Campogalliano a little town near Modena, about 20 minutes away. This area is in the country and has a lot of small lakes for fishing and canoeing, bike trails, picnic areas, a playpark for kids (with a bouncy castle!), a Gelateria (ice cream parlour) and the Agriturismo “La Falda” which is also a Fattoria Didattica (An Italian “Teaching Farm”, which I explained here).

The food was totally delicious, the interior was very simple and rustic, and the animals were totally…..REAL.

Can you tell I’m a city girl? I love going out to the country and being with animals because it is so foreign to me. Actually we had chickens and rabbits growing up, but my dad (who is Italian) took 100% care of them….I was scared to go in an collect the eggs!

I don’t want my son to be so disconnected from farm life. Living in Italy has given me a whole new appreciation for farmers. Their food is delicious because their primary ingredients are delicious and you can’t have quality ingredients without FARMERS.

Our lunch was a fixed price menu, it was approximately 30 euro per adult and included an antipasto, a few pasta dishes, grilled meats and side dishes, wine, water and dessert!

So what is an Agriturismo?

An Agriturismo is traditionally a farm that offers tourists the possibility of a meal with products exclusively made by that farm and usually it is also a Bed and Breakfast with the possibility to sleep there.

The Word “Agriturismo” is a combination of agriculture and tourism. I LOVE THIS CONCEPT…..bringing the tourist out to the country!

Modern day Agriturismi are a little more liberal and not all of the meals are made from their own products,so if that is important to you, you’ll want to call in advance. Often the term “Agriturismo” is used to describe a rustic restaurant or “trattoria” that is housed in a converted stable or rustic dwelling. This is a VERY Italian experience and to find an Agriturismo feel free to visit Agriturismi.it

In the next few weeks you will be seeing a LOT of posts dedicated to agriculture, the Italian countryside and all of the outdoors experiences we’ve been having. With this weather I hate being indoors. I much prefer that we’re all out, breathing fresh air, smelling the roses and touching the pigs!

The Animals !

I loved our day at the Agriturismo La Falda because there were quite a few animals that we could get close to. My 2 year old really enjoyed feeding the goats, and chasing the chickens….not to mention the 800lb (roughly 400 kg) PIG!!! It came out of its pen and walked around until it found it’s favourite mud puddle……this was a little more exciting than Peppa Pig!

We left the Agriturismo and headed out along the bike path that cuts across the fields along the lakes to the other side. There we had ice cream, chatted and watched the people on their canoes. All in all it was a fantastic day, and I’m so happy that the spring is here and summer is on its way.
