What happened

  • In 1945, in Colorado, a farmer tried to butcher a chicken
  • The axe missed the jugular vein and most of the brain stem stayed intact
  • The brain stem controls basic functions like breathing and heart rate

How Mike survived

  • He didn’t have a head, but:
    • One ear remained
    • Enough brain tissue remained to keep him alive
    • The jugular didn’t bleed out
  • The farmer fed him liquid food with an eyedropper
  • Mike was kept alive for 18 months

How he died

  • He eventually choked on mucus because the farmer forgot the syringe needed to clear his throat

Why this was possible (but extremely rare)

  • Birds don’t need their full brain to survive short-term
  • Survival without a head is not normal or repeatable
  • Mike is the longest-living headless animal ever recorded
